The Cyprus Seasons
Cyprus offers sunny days and fine temperatures almost every day of the year. Temperatures are seldom extreme, and visitors can swim from late spring until as late as November. The cooler months are ideal for hiking, walking, visiting cultural sites and festivals. Winter even brings skiers to the Troodos mountain range.
Spring
Flower lovers enjoy an explosion of colour in the early spring. The first orchids bloom in January and by mid-February the winter rains have brought the countryside to life, with wildflowers blooming in the reserves such as the Akamas area near Pafos. March daytime temperatures are around 19C or 65F, dropping to 9C or 40F at night.
In April and into the middle of May spring is in full force. Many hikers and walkers visit Cyprus at this time to take advantage of the good weather and the plant life. Cyprus has 1,950 species of flowering plants, 140 of which are only found on the island.
Summer
Summer lasts from mid-May to mid-October with temperatures in the mid-30s and cloudless skies. The beaches are a strong attraction, with safe swimming and activities such as sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving attracting tourists. Visits to the archaeological sites are best arranged early in the morning or in late afternoon as it is very hot over midday.
Cyprus benefits from the majestic Troodos mountains, easily accessible from all the major tourist resorts. Even in the height of summer, temperatures are cooler in the Troodos, and many locals head for the mountains to escape the heat.
Autumn
October is usually still warm and sunny, although it starts to cool down in the evenings. At this time of year, the leaves begin to change colour. In November, although it’s often pleasant enough to swim during the day, the nights can be chilly and farmers welcome the first rains of the season. During the autumn, wine tasting excursions are popular.
Winter
In December and January, it is winter in Cyprus, but there are still on average six hours of bright sunshine a day. This is the best time to visit the many heritage sites on the island. The island enjoys a range of cultural and musical events at this time of year. It is possible to ski in the Troodos mountains until February and sometimes later.
